Market Nourishes Community and Farmers Alike

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY, April __2014 –The Arlington Business Improvement District (Arlington BID –, a focus group dedicated to fostering sustainability for businesses and organizations that call Poughkeepsie’s Arlington neighborhood home, has announced that the Arlington Farmers’ Market will reopen for the season on Thursday, June 4th. Held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. each Thursday through October 29th, weather-permitting, on the Vassar Alumni Flats Lawn on Raymond Avenue, the market features an array of vendors selling local vegetables, fruits, honey, meat, wool products, baked goods, homemade soap and jewelry. The market also participates in the Farmers’ Market Nutrition program, which enables families in need of public assistance and veterans to shop for locally grown vegetables and fruit.

“The Arlington Farmers’ Market has been a staple in our community for 16 years and counting,” says Bob Legacy, director of the Arlington BID who notes that the market was founded in 1999 by Jeff Horst, of Vassar College, and Bill Martin, a local farmer, and managed by the BID since 2001. “It’s something we’re especially proud of. The Arlington Farmers’ Market is a vital part of the product sales and revenue for local farmers. In fact, when you shop at our market, you are helping a local farmer stay in business, as these markets bring in nearly 50% of their annual revenue.”

Market Highlights

More than 20 vendors will join for the 2015 season, with more expected to sign on soon. Many past vendors are returning, along with some new and exciting additions, including a Kingston-based farm, a unique baked goods seller and a local dog biscuit company.

The Farmers’ Market is also welcoming entertainers each Thursday, performing for either charitable donations or tips. One entertainer or group will be scheduled per day. Interested parties can contact Bob Legacy at

“We also invite all visitors to stop by the market’s Arlington Has It table to learn more about the neighborhood and the excellent selection of events we have planned for this summer and fall,” adds Legacy.
